Park City is an unbelievable place, and the reasons to ski there are as plentiful as the snow that blankets the mountains. First Park City is easy to get to. After a short 45-minute drive from the Salt Lake International Airport and you can be skiing in snow famous the world over. Park City just happens to be home of the "Greatest Snow on Earth", with over 350 inches of snow per year. But just in case Mother Nature is in one of her moods; Park City has a state-of-the-art snowmaking system, which guarantees the best possible conditions. There are over 3300 acres of skiable terrain with an additional 3500 acres at "The Canyons", and 1100 acres at Deer Valley Resort; giving you three ski areas with over 7000 acre to ski. And Park City offers Utah's most extensive snowboarding facilities, as well as a national award-winning ski and snowboard school.
We will be staying in the Park Station Condominium/Hotel in 2 bedroom/2 bath condos on Main St. in downtown Park City. The condos are located near the town lift/bridge which means no long walks to the lifts, and it's only a short bus rides to nearby DeerValley or "The Canyons" ski areas. Park City has more six-passenger, high-speed lifts than any other resort in the U.S. Their snowmaking reaches nearly every corner of the resort's 3,300 acres with grooming that locals know as simply the best. Other attractions include their famous PayDay halfpipe, the new Eagle Race Arena 'Super 'Pipe,' a Pay-for-Play boardercross course, a beginner terrain park, and the Sitka Run 'Super Park'. While intermediates tend to think of Park City, as "their" mountain, novice skiers thrill to the lengthy ease of Summit House run while experts head to the bowls. This is headquarters of the U.S. Ski Team and it shows: exciting mogul's runs, racing trails and even a new giant slalom course. Skiing aficionados of all levels won't be bored as Park City runs are divided such that 18% are beginner, 44% Intermediate, and 38% advance.
What happens when the sun goes down in Park City? Well, if the hot tubs and sauna are not inviting enough after a day of skiing, then head on out and explore the town of Park City with its unique charm that's been carried down from its flamboyant mining town days. At the turn of the century, Park City was home to silver miners a wild bunch whose lust for life has forever left its imprint on the town. Off-slope, Park City is quite special, probably with more National Historic Register buildings per square foot than any other Victorian mining town. You'll find over 100 shops, 80 restaurants, and a dozen bars and clubs. In fact, Park City's nightlife is consistently rated among the top resorts in the country. Park City's many award-winning restaurants are among the finest in the Intermountain West, reflecting many different culinary styles and influences. With over 100 options, there's something for every taste and every moodand since everything's so close, they're all within walking distance or a short free bus ride away. After dinner you may want to wind down with an evening of contemporary jazz, or turn it up at a local dance club. You'll find no bedtimes around this place.
Nearby is Deer Valley, super deluxe and quite special, Deer Valley is a world-class resort focused on personal service. It is known as the ski resort that revolutionized ski-area service. Opened in 1981, Dear Valley has been providing a level of service and convenience rarely found at a ski resort. Little details like uniformed "ski valets" to care for your gear and attended ski storage are unique to Deer Valley. In addition to gracious pampering, the skiing is not to be denied, with over 1100 spectacular groomed acres on three mountains laid out in 67 runs that follow the natural contours of the rolling landscape. Skiing feels effortless here, or perhaps, all that pampering has worked its wonders. There are plenty of long mogul runs and three bowls with endless tree skiing for the most demanding expert, while the rest of us can enjoy blissful cruising forever.
The nearby Canyons Resort is one of the five largest ski resorts in the country. The resort offers over 3,500 acres to ski, on eight mountains' worth of trails. The resort has expanded, giving skiers/boarders access to an amazing amount of varied terrain from the exciting terrain park to a variety of runs that will satisfy any level of skier or snowboarder. And it's all just four miles from our condo on Main Street.
Park City has so much to offer that you have to Ski it to Believe it. Don't miss out on this magical wonderland. Contact Kevin today!

The four mountains of Aspen/Snowmass comprise one of the best-known ski resorts in the world. Snowmass is easily the largest of the four with over 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, and a 4,400-foot vertical drop. Terrain is varied here, though 55% is considered intermediate. Buttermilk ski resort caters primarily to beginner and intermediate skiers. A free shuttle service interconnects each of these mountains, so you can experience multiple areas during your vacation. Snowmass Village is clearly built with access to the slopes in mind. The design is 'tiered', with multiple levels extending up the hillside. Trip Price: ( price quote ) 20 participants
There's a great scene in the Kafka classic holiday movie It's A Wonderful Life where Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed are dancing the Charleston, unaware that the high school floor they're on was ever retracting, courtesy of a jealous suitor's sabotage, and revealing the underlying swimming pool. The rest of the crowd knows it, and they start taking delight in watching the remaining couple dance closer and closer to the edge (and falling off), blissfully unaware of the peril. In fact they think the crowd's ooh's and aah's are for their dancing! Finally, after about three razor-thin "misses", they go back one final time and splash! disappear into the drink, followed ironically by the rest of the crowd who didn't realize the fun!
The thought occurred that running a volunteer ski club today is much like that scene. We're ever "dancing back and forth" between the next item of good news and, well, not so good news. Putting trips together nowadays is an exercise in patience and negotiation. Since 9/11, the travel world as practically been stood on its head. Ski brokers, tours, resorts, and activities companies all seem to want their money earlier and earlier; airlines seem to want to commit later and later. Group bookings are often much harder to accomplish in these days of reduced schedules and airline bankruptcy threats (talk about their own "dancing on edge"!). I can pretty much remember when joining the Club some nine years ago, that prices seem to be set in June, and barely if at all fluctuated. Not today. It seems like there's always another wrench in the works, or some "hidden cost" or airline change that mucks something up one way or another; or what is promised as an attractive activity or great lodging sometimes goes completely bust. There's been so much "dancing on edge" in the last few years when putting together our trips, it would make your head spin!
The ski industry has shown this to some degree. One popular trend has been to schedule summer trips, or "sightseeing" winter excursions to places with marginal skiing but lots of culture. While this is clearly acceptable and in some cases the only lifeblood for the ski club, we in Austin are fortunate. Our Club's membership has remained steady, actually slightly increased, in the past 5 years while many clubs have seen decreases. We still put more than 400 people on planes and buses for ski trips per year, most to pure ski destinations. We seem to be financially in sound shape, at times when other clubs are struggling.
So what's the point? I guess two things: First, that we are very fortunate to have such a great Executive Committee doing all this "edge dancing" for the members, and second, that we appreciate you members, especially during those times when things get mucked up, delayed, or more expensive (who likes expensive surprises?). Most of the time, this comes through in "unexpected" price changes, new hoops you have to crawl through, or incomplete answers (of course, sometimes it delightfully comes back in refunds!). But as an EC member now in my 6th year, I can tell you these things: first, you can't believe the superb hands your Club is in currently our board members are incredibly competent; and second, we will always keep our responsibility to you in mind that it's your money we're handling, and we strive to spend and use it frugally and wisely, without compromising quality where we can. Some of our board members make it a personal mission to get the best deal for you, and I can't tell you how many times at EC meetings the refrain is "for the members." The current successes of our Club are a two-way street, and both members and the Board are doing their part. I hope you all realize that when you might get a seemingly unwelcome change or new course of action for trips. I mean, it's all kind of worth it in the end. The feeling I had when skiing virtually alone in almost knee-deep powder on a cold, brilliantly, penetratingly blue sunny day in Vail's Siberian and Far East Bowls last year makes these efforts (and even temporary headaches) more than worth it. Just like those dancers in the movie, what seems at time a problem or roadblock might just turn out to be the best thing after all!

Get "Teed Off" At
Another Season of Golf!
With all the wet winter weather, the golf courses are looking spectacular, and yes, golf season is starting. We'll play every week as long as the warm weather lasts (into next fall), after work, usually at a discount for nine holes before sunset. Details about which day(s) of the week, tee times, locations, and other information are coming together, but if you want to get started, contact Cindy Swannack who can give you more information on the next outing. Note: it's important that you talk to Cindy to get on the e-mailing/calling roster, because just showing up without pre-reserving is highly discouraged! Look for this to be included under the "ongoing activities" in future issues!
