Filling up quickly just 5 spots left! Overlooking beautiful Lake Louise, just 40 minutes west of Banff, shines a "Diamond in the Wilderness," the Chateau Lake Louise. What an exciting place to call "home" for a week! And what a week - the 2002 TSC Traditional! This magnificent Victorian "Jewel of the Canadian Rockies" has recently undergone a $65 million renovation. Both the hotel and its setting are breathtaking. Numerous dining venues, a vibrant nightclub, a full service health club, varied outdoor activities, and eclectic shopping make the Chateau experience a holiday in itself. And our lodging is the base for all of the great Texas Ski Council (TSC) parties and activities! The TSC has put together a slate of activities to keep skiers and non-skiers alike actively involved all week long! Packed in between the Welcoming Party and the Farewell Awards Dinner, we'll enjoy complimentary mountain tours, a Mountain Rocker Party, the TSC challenge and individual NASTAR races, a mountain BBQ at Lodge of Ten Peaks, the TSC Mini Olympics, a torchlight dinner, and an afternoon and evening in the town of Banff! Need more? There's always ice skating, dogsledding, heli-skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling!
We'll have three great mountains to ski Louise, Sunshine Village and Norquay at Banff. The 3 areas feature more than 200 runs on 7,500 acres of skiable terrain. Each has a unique character and the three are available on one convenient interchangeable lift ticket, which includes frequent and worry-free shuttle transportation between the hotel and each ski area. Lake Louise has an excellent variety of terrain for all levels- 25% beginner runs, 45% intermediate and 30% expert. With the longest run at 5 miles, vertical rise of 3,250 feet and a skiable area of 4200 acres, there is a good reason to start your conditioning program right now! Sunshine claims some of the softest, lightest powder in the Canadian Rockies and some of the best advanced terrain in Canada Goat's Eye and the newly opened Delirium Dive! Sunshine is blessed with the most abundant snowfall of any Alberta ski area; 300 - 400 inches, more than most Colorado ski areas! With stunning alpine scenery, 12 lifts (including 5 quad chairs), 92 designated runs and 3 mountains to explore, skiers and snowboarders can be assured a great time! Banff Mount Norquay encompasses a wide variety of terrain to suit everyone, from gentle beginner runs that provide areas to build confidence and skill, up to heart pounding double black diamond runs that will challenge any expert.
And speaking of shopping - we'll also be visiting world-famous Banff village to enjoy its remarkable shopping and dining. Over 200 shops provide for the ultimate shopping experience. With the American dollar buying 1 1/2 times its value in Canada, the words "shop 'til you drop" take on new meaning! Of course, you can always just eat and drink Banff/Lake Louise has more than 120 dining and aprës-ski establishments - enough to please the most discriminating tastes!
If you've never seen beautiful Lake Louise, nestled between picturesque mountains and glaciers, then you can't believe what you've been missing! If you have been there before, well you know what a great trip this will be! Lake Louise's beauty, wealth of activities, and terrific skiing packed into one inexpensive package!

Experience the magic!
Great skiing! Great sightseeing! Great culture! All at a great price! Beautiful Innsbruck, the capital of the world-famous Austrian Tyrol region, is synonymous with the development of skiing as a sport. Tracing its European roots back over 1300 years, Innsbruck became famous as a center of the famous Habsburg Court high culture during the 13th century. The incredible beauty and charm of this heart of European skiing must be experienced! Innsbruck hosted the 1964 and 1976 Olympics, and continues to be the focal point of the Tyrol's magnificent resorts (eight skiing regions, 210 lifts, over 300 miles of trails). You'll definitely want to ski the famous Patscherkofel and Axamer Lizum Olympic regions, plus we'll have options to ski the Stubai glacier, Kitzbühel and St. Anton. If you want to take a day off from skiing, or two, or three, or every day, there are wonderful sightseeing excursions available: Salzburg, Swarovski Crystal World, Bavarian Castles, the "Ice Man" in Italy, and even a day trip to Venice. Our lodging in Innsbruck is a 4-star hotel with breakfast and dinner included. It is conveniently located near the City Center's historical attractions, shopping and a happening nightlife. On Friday after breakfast, we'll go to Munich where we will be staying that night at the King's Hotel near the center of town. Spend the afternoon sightseeing or shopping. On Friday evening we have included a group dinner at the world-famous Hofbraühaus in Munich. Sound good? Even magical? Then join us!
Editor's Note: Prices and details are subject to change! At this time the Big Sky and Grindelwald trips are full and taking waiting lists. However, contact the Trip Chairs for trip status, because availability changes frequently!

What better place to talk turkey than spending Thanksgiving at one of Colorado's most accessible and prime ski areas? Just a short drive from Denver, Copper Mountain provides abundant thrills; from the intermediate-styled Union Peak area, to the daredevil east side of Copper Peak, the mountain's 118 trails and over 2,400 vertical feet give you enough room to work off that Thanksgiving meal! And if you get hungry or thirsty again, Copper's famous Village Square has all the restaurants and pubs you'd want. As the TSC Fall Roundup, of course there'll be the usual great parties and races. Our 2br/2ba condos are at the base of the mountain, and we're taking a direct flight from Austin to Denver. Note that the departure date has been moved from Tues. 20th to early Wed. 21st to secure much cheaper flights. We'll still be able to ski 3 1/2 days (Wed p.m.-Sat).

This trip was so wonderful last year that you insisted we return again this holiday season! Located in the Wasatch Mountains 17 miles east of Ogden, Snowbasin averages 400 inches a year of famous Utah powder, and offers superb skiing on 3,200 acres, with 54 trails and 3,000 ft. of vertical, for all ability levels (20% beginner, 50% intermediate, and 30% advanced). And, of course, add to this the thrill of being able to ski on the upcoming Olympic Downhill and GS courses, plus all the pre-Olympic style and pageantry. We'll also have the option of skiing that untracked snow at Powder Mountain, and also the fabulously upgraded Canyons. The club will be staying in downtown Ogden with an easy walk to the 25th street historic district and the Ogden mall. Dining, shopping, museums, pubs, antique and art galleries, boutiques, etc are nearby. Our suite hotel has a separate living room and bedroom, plus a free buffet breakfast with cooked to order omelets, and a weekday happy hour. Our trip price includes air from Austin, airport to hotel transfers, daily shuttle service to the ski areas, and 6 nights lodging. Last year some folks decided to use rental cars, so if you opt out of the club's shuttle service deduct $112 per person from the trip price. Ogden is the spot for your pre-Olympic holiday fun, so don't miss out!

A welcome return for the Club! After well over a decade, we're going back to Montana's premier resort. Big Sky is a 4,350 foot answer to a key ski question: where's the nation's highest vertical drop? Big Sky is also incredible scenery, short lift lines, over 400 inches of annual snow, and Meadow Village's and Mountain Village's shopping, restaurants, and nightlife (plus a few celebrities might show up from their Montana ranches!). We'll be staying in 3br / 3 1/2 ba, ski in/out condos, with a hot tub and a restaurant on site. Plus, an on-call, free shuttle runs until midnight for those emergency grocery or pub runs! Whether you're a seasoned Club vet who wants a new destination, or newcomer who loves great skiing, gorgeous scenery and culture, Big Sky should be your choice!

Newly-redesigned Durango Mountain Resort (formerly Purgatory) has been working hard to give you the best in a Colorado ski vacation week! Our trip last year was full of Durango's fabled dry powder, and this year we're returning with the TSC. We'll also offer a short trip from Wednesday to Sunday. From the gentle slopes of Columbine, to the groomed cruisers like Paradise, to the trap-door headwalls of Styx, Purgatory's 11 lifts covering 75 trails serve up an ideal blend of 23% beginner, 51% intermediate and 26% expert terrain. And there's a great extra deal, called the Total Ticket: if you want to take a day off you can exchange one day of skiing for activities like snowmobiling, sleigh riding, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, or a tour of the Mesa Verde ruins. Add to this the TSC parties and races, and you have a great Western-flavored week in store. Durango is the place to be in early February!

Talk about a slam-dunk sure thing! This perennial Austin Skiers favorite is also most-frequently cited by ski magazines and polls as the number one world destination. And why not? The Whistler/Blackcomb complex is the largest single resort in the world, boasting over 7,200 acres on two mountains. That figures out to over 200 trails, 35 lifts, plus over a vertical mile of skiing on each mountain highest in the Western Hemisphere!! But all this size shouldn't fool you the beautiful, quaint, internationally flavored Village, tucked into Whistler's V-shaped valley, allows quick, convenient access to either mountain from the base. And, Whistler's low elevation means less panting and more carving in that 360 inch per year snowfall! You'll find shopping aplenty, and a remarkable choice of world dining cuisines (plus don't forget the mountain itself some of the best resort food at remarkably low prices!). The great news is that this year we have a prime location - we'll be staying in 2br/2ba condos across from the Village marketplace, where you can take advantage of the great exchange rate for the Canadian dollar. When you're talking a number one value, you're talking Whistler!

Another Austin Skiers first-time exclusive! Want to visit a foreign land while still in the USA? Well, that's the feeling many people get when they visit our country's "Final Frontier", beautiful Alaska! And, we're joining the TSC for our first trip into this wilderness paradise. Tucked amid the Tugach Mountains on Alaska's south central coast, Alyeska offers the best of Alaska's beauty and thrills. The mountain features 2,500 vertical feet of skiing on some 62 runs, serviced by 10 lifts, and its low elevation (base only 250 feet!) prevents the thin-air blues, while accommodating the 480 inches of snow annually. And, the resort features the must-see, majestic Alyeska Prince Hotel, and the spectacular Alyeska Tramway, from which you'll see heart-stopping views on your way to the summit! We'll spend the first two nights in Anchorage for a real treat - we'll be on hand to observe the start of the world-famous +Iditarod dogsled race! Then we'll take the hour or so trip up to Alyeska for 4 days of skiing and numerous other activities with the TSC. Want to experience a first? Join us on our first Alaska expedition!

Are you California dreaming? Can you say Mammoth? How about 3,500 skiable acres, 30 lifts and 3100 vertical feet? Mammoth Mountain is centrally located on the eastern slopes of the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range. A traditional favorite, this huge area has something for all levels of skiers. Mammoth is 30% beginner, 40% intermediate, and 30% advanced terrain. Also, can you say sun? Mammoth has over 255 sunny days (70%) per year. You'll be treated to unobstructed views of high deserts and lush valleys bordered by the snowcapped Sierras. Our 2br/2ba condos are just a short walk from the base area, and feature 3 hot tubs and a heated swimming pool. A free on-call shuttle service is available for shopping or trips to some of the many restaurants and pubs in the village. Snowboard & ski rentals are just down the street at Canyon Lodge. Additional activities include cross-country skiing, snowmobile excursions, and fine dining at more that 30 restaurants on the mountain or in town. For a mammoth great time, join us at one of California's truly great ski experiences!

Still another Austin Skiers first-time exclusive (that's 3 next season)! Calling this a vacation is like calling Texas a small state; this trip's more like an adventure! How much can you do in ten days? We'll test the limit! First, we'll travel to western Switzerland to the village of Grindelwald. Headquarters of Switzerland's gorgeous Jungfraujoch ("top of Europe") region, with a total of 49 lifts and 130+ miles of marked ski runs (not including the bowls and off-trail skiing), Grindelwald has three main ski areas, and lies near the beautiful Aletsch glacier complex. Home of the first cable car (1908), Grindelwald is known for its pristine marble, ice commerce, chapel of St. Petronell (the patron saint of Alps travelers), and the world's highest railroad. In fact, our hotel is just across from the cog railway train that will take us on the short ride up above the village each morning. After five days of exquisite skiing, we switch gears, weather, and culture! It's on to beautiful, historic Greece, where we arrive in Athens, then take a three day cruise of several Greek islands, and a visit to the Turkish port of Kusadasi. After the cruise, we'll spend two days seeing Athens and its quaint, charming Plaka district of cafes and shops, and the famous Parthenon complex. We'll also take a short bus trip to Classical Greece's religious center, Delphi, and its memorable ruins. All this in ten days? Must be a dream; well, dream no more spend Spring Break in our first trip to these marvelous destinations! Note that this trip is priced for departure from Dallas; and Austin-to-Dallas (and back).

On Sunday September 30th, 22 Austin Skiers and 2 reps from Red River, New Mexico ski resort (Wally and Christy Dobbs) "linked" up for a wonderful afternoon of golf. The weather was perfect! A balmy, slightly overcast, lightly breezy September afternoon was the setting at Jimmy Clay Golf Course. Teams were comprised of players ranging from newbies to the game to those with country club memberships, and a best ball format ensured that the pace was steady and shots well-placed. Prior to the start, players were able to purchase 'mulligans' (that's 'do-overs' in golf lingo) for $5 each (limit two per player) to cover anticipated whiffs. That money raised, totaling $205, will be donated to aid in the Disaster Relief efforts.
When all was said and done, and everyone agreed that the afternoon was thoroughly enjoyable, prizes were awarded in a variety of categories to the following recipients:
First place team (lowest score): Bob Bauer, Mary Lyons, Frank Karner and Christy Dobbs
Female closest to the pin: Christy Dobbs
Female longest drive: Donna Peterman
Male closest to the pin: Gabe Ayson
Male longest drive: Jim Davis
Prizes were also awarded to the last place team, but we'll leave it up to you to find out who played in that lucky foursome! While giving a warm round of applause to our prize recipients, we're particularly pleased with the fun and enjoyment that everyone in the tourney experienced. More kudos to other participants: Wally Dobbs, Liz Earhart, Martha Bauer, Josh Earhart, Charles Earhart, Cindy Swannack, Will Edwards, Eve Lepore, Jim Howalt, Mary Gasal, Janice Kaczmarek, Bill Woody, Tom Staley, Charles Gordon, Terry Champion, Jerry Sexton and Bonnie Graham. And finally, a BIG THANK YOU goes out to Otis Sikes for organizing such a wonderful tournament and for ordering such great weather. If you missed out last month, don't worry we're planning another tournament next spring...watch for details after the snow melts!
Escape the heat next summer as Austin Skiers join other Texas ski clubs in a fantastic trip to the exotic South Pacific islands of New Zealand and Fiji. The planned itinerary includes six days in Queenstown, New Zealand - skiing, jetboating, bungi jumping, horse riding, luge riding, mountain biking, wine tours, etc. - then one day sightseeing in Auckland. We'd continue on to Fiji for six days at the Sheraton Fiji Resort, where we'll have the opportunity to windsurf, sea kayak, golf, scuba dive, play tennis, do some deep sea fishing, or just relax in the spa and fitness center. Breakfast is included throughout the trip. There is also a 7 night scuba diving option at the Garden Island Resort in Taveuni, Fiji. Trip price is estimated at $2,075 including airfare from Los Angeles, 12 nights lodging, and ground transfers (add approx. $360 for air from Austin).
To reserve your space on this adventure, mail your trip application and $200 per person deposit (make checks to "Austin Skiers" - fully refundable if we don't have at least 12 members sign up) to Austin Skiers, c/o Doug Jordan, 13552 Anarosa Loop, Austin, TX 78727. You can also sign up at the November 13 meeting. Trip applications are available on the Club Web site, or from any officer or trip leader. For further information please contact Doug at trips@austinskiers.org, or phone 671-8487.
HELP WANTED: We need a trip chair to lead this trip! Contact Doug to volunteer.
Thanks
I am continually amazed at the generosity of the Austin Skiers members. Last month we asked for donations to the American Red Cross Relief Fund and the Tom Zimmermann Medical Fund. Many of you opened your wallets and gave to these wonderful causes. Now I am asking you to give again. At the November club meeting, at Sail and Ski, we'd like you to go through your closets and cabinets to donate to a couple of other causes The Capitol Area Food Bank and Coats for Kids.
Spend a few minutes over the next few weeks and go through your old ski jackets. (You know, the ones you don't wear any more and no one will buy at the Ski Swap.) Bring your coats and jackets to the November meeting and we will deliver them to the Coats for Kids drive. After you finish cleaning out your closets, go to your food pantry and select a few cans of food. Bring these items with you to the meeting as well. We will take any non-perishable food items and deliver them to the Capitol Area Food Bank. Donating to either or both of these wonderful charities will get you off to a great start for the holidays, and you will be a better person for doing it.
Time to ski
Speaking of the holidays, our first ski trip of the year is right around the corner, the TSC trip to Copper Mountain which leaves the week of Thanksgiving. Looks like we are off to another great ski year. I hope you have been able to reserve a spot to one of our wonderful ski destinations. Even though some of our trips are sold out, there are still plenty of opportunities to get on another trips. Please see the trip articles throughout this issue to see which trips have openings. Even if the trip you want to go on is full, go ahead and get on the wait list. Since we all lead such busy lives, someone might have to cancel off your desired trip for one reason or another. Who knows, you may get that much-anticipated call from a trip chair to let you know a spot has opened up, and you can now join them on the trip.
...but first about flying
On another topic, I want to say a word about airfares. As I'm sure all of you know, we price our trips so that Austin Skiers breaks even on each trip. However, the actual price we pay for a ticket is not set in stone until we actually purchase the tickets and put your name on one. We usually have a contract that states the fare, but taxes and fuel surcharges often vary. This means that we will sometimes get an unpleasant surprise when it comes time to cut the tickets. If the change is a small one, we will normally stay with our previously decided price. But, sometimes the increases are in the $20 range. Please keep this in mind if your trip leader tells you that the trip price has gone up a bit; it's not their fault, we're just passing on the increased cost from the airline.
Contest ending!
Our membership contest has come to an end and what a success it has been. Barbara Jacquin and Gary Roth are busy tallying the score of who recruited the most new members. I understand there are several contestants. Their results will be announced at the November meeting at Sail and Ski. In addition, we will draw for the other two prizes of $100 trip certificates. And you don't have to be present to win, but you did have to recruit at least one new member to be eligible for the drawing. And just in case you feel really lucky, you can only win one of the $100 trip certificates.
See you at the next club meeting
or happy hour.

See Tere's article on p. 8 about these worthy causes. As we usually do each year, we're using our November meeting to have a canned food drive for the Capital Area Food Bank. Please bring a can or two of non-perishable food items, which will go to needy families in the Austin area. We're also looking for your old coats, especially children's, for the annual KVUE/Jack Brown Coats for Kids Drive. Your old coats will be cleaned by Jack Brown Cleaners, then distributed to needy children during the holidays. We appreciate your generosity as you always donate bountifully to this cause every year!
Have you seen the cool, six-story tall IMAX movie screen at the new Bob Bullock Texas History Museum yet? Well, now's your chance to take it all in! On Friday, Nov. 9th, the Club will view the exciting action movie, 'Extreme', which among other thrills and adventure contains ski scenes. We'll meet in the IMAX foyer in the museum about 7:40 p.m. You should purchase your $5 ticket first on your own, then meet at the foyer; the movie begins at 8. Museum tickets are separate should you wish to take that in before the movie. For more information, call Cindy Berry at 248-9544
Join us for a Saturday in Salado (about 40 miles north of Austin) on December 1. We'll begin at 11:30 with a 25 mile bike ride (shorter option available) through the Central Texas countryside east and north of Salado. After we have built up an appetite, we'll have a late lunch (or early dinner) at the historic Stagecoach Inn. By the time we finish eating, the luminarias lining the streets of Salado will have been lit, and we'll wander around the town. This is the beginning of the Salado Christmas season, so there will be strolling carolers and a live Nativity scene to add to the festivities, and all of the shops will be ablaze with lights. Even if you don't want to do the bike ride, you can still join us for lunch and the activities afterwards. Contact Otis Sikes at 258-8324 or OSikes@aol.com for more information or to make reservations for lunch at the Stagecoach Inn.
Hey, the Yankees might be pretty good, but they have nothing on our Dynamos of the Diamond! The Austin Skiers join the elite teams this century in sports by winning 4 City League Softball Championships! Can you say back-to-back-to-back-to-back, the menage-a-trois plus 1 of first place finishes? Our softball sluggers continued their winning ways by sweeping the Summer 1 and Summer 2 City League seasons, making this 4 championships in a row spanning two years. The last championship game was a thrilling, come from behind victory that required extra innings before the final outcome was determined. Team members include : Martha Bauer, Dennis Frasier, Lea Bass, Ben Mathis, Kim and Bill Alexander, Kristi Anderson, Don Painter, MJ Lin, Rob Gjertsen and Bob Conevery, Super Subs Terry Champion and Bob Bauer, and team mascot Boz the Wonder Dog (really!). We'd like to thank everyone for their support during the season, and hope to see you on the slopes. We'll be taking a break until next spring, when we terrorize the league once again watch here for times and places, and come out and support us; like the Yanks, we know how to repeat!

Durango has added activities to the Total Ticket, and should have a new, relocated Chair 4 (part of $2 million in improvements for this winter) open soon, making for faster access to the backside Whistler/Blackcomb spent this summer widening trails and adding snowmaking to the Olympic area; and the reliable Canadian Farmer's Almanac says that January and February snowfall will be above average'Alyeska is ready to open Nov. 17th and the snow is already falling in the mountains above Girdwood; this makes sense because the resort is coming off of a January '01 snow record of 274 inches'for one month our travelers to Mammoth will get to check out a timely event, the Fire and Police Olympics, March 11-16 Grindelwald has upgraded their rail-tram system, and the beautiful new subway in Athens, Greece is open, making getting around from our hotel much easier!
